On 30th October 2025, the Inner Wheel Club of Ijapo took a bold step in the fight against cancer, organizing a powerful Cancer Awareness Walk and Lecture on Early Detection in collaboration with FUTA Teaching Hospital, Akure.
The programme consisted of an energetic 5km walk from FUTA Teaching Hospital to the market, bringing the message of cancer awareness directly into the heart of the community. Along the way, fliers were distributed on the streets and in the market, ensuring the life-saving message reached as many hands and hearts as possible.
At the market, traders and community members gathered to receive vital education on cancer, its signs, risks, and most importantly, the power of early detection. A Consultant Radio-Oncologist led the session, also giving a practical demonstration on how to perform breast self-examination — equipping every woman present with a skill that could one day save her life.
In one of the most moving moments of the day, two breast cancer survivors stepped forward to share their personal journeys, encouraging the women in attendance to present to the hospital promptly whenever they notice any change in their breasts. Their courage gave the message a human face and that made all the difference.
The market women received the programme with overwhelming appreciation, expressing gratitude for the knowledge shared and making a collective promise to act on what they had learned.
